Connecting Data and Voice Networks between Branch Offices over a Radio Link

 Typical users
- Large enterprises
- Dispersed campus network
- Mobile operators
 Typical applications
- Connecting branch offices located in different buildings
- Voice and data integration
- Cellular transport
- Shared LANs and PBXs
- Compressed voice

Many enterprises need to connect the voice and data networks of branch offices located in different buildings within a city. The challenge is to cost-effectively connect the buildings and to combine the voice and data networks over this connection.

Alvarion and RAD have teamed up to provide a simple yet robust point-to-point solution for compressed voice and data integration. Alvarion's BreezeLINK full-duplex wireless modem connects the buildings with a "wireless leased line," and RAD's Kilomux-2100 data, voice, fax and LAN multiplexer integrates the voice and data traffic on this connection.

The solution provides voice and data transmission at a range of up to 40 km (25 miles) over a 2.4 GHz wireless connection (license-free frequency in most countries). It ensures minimal delay and protocol transparency, so that applications such as voice are assured the bandwidth and short delay they require. Voice, fax and data modem transmission is provided through support of standard PCM (64 kbps) and ADPCM (16-32 kbps) voice, as well as high quality compressed voice (4.8-16 kbps).

In the application below, the sites are connected via V.35, which is cost-effective, easy to configure and offers high bandwidth. When using such a link, the Kilomux-2100 unit connects through its KML.1 V.35 card. The Kilomux-2104 unit has a V.35 interface built-in. This application connects the office LAN on both sides and allows both sites to share one PBX.

Kilomux-2100: Features and Benefits

- Offers a wide selection of main link, system and I/O modules. Kilomux supports the integration of data, voice/fax and LAN applications, allowing the integration of most applications over one or two main links at rates from 9.6 kbps to 1536 kbps.

- Connects to services such as leased line, ISDN, Fractional E1/T1, fiber and IP. Main link buffers and echo cancellation on the voice channels ensure full operation over radio.

- Supports both analog and digital voice interfaces for direct connection to PBX tie lines and extensions, ISDN PBX extension lines, telephone handsets and E1/T1 trunks.

- Uses time-division multiplexing (TDM) techniques to ensure minimal delay and protocol transparency, so that applications such as voice are assured the necessary bandwidth and short delay.

- Voice, fax, and data modem transmission through support of standard PCM (64 kbps) and ADPCM (16-32 kbps) voice, as well as high quality compressed voice (4.8-16 kbps).

- Supports a wide variety of serial data interfaces, from low speed connections of a few kbps to high speed connections of up to 614.4 kbps, as well as an Ethernet bridge/router module for end-to-end LAN connectivity.

- Provides redundancy, priority bumping and switch backup operation modes, enabling alternate routing in case of failure.

BreezeLINK: Features and Benefits

- Frequency hopping spread spectrum ensures security, reliability and resistance to interference, coexisting with other wireless networks operating in the same frequency range.

- Up to 40 km (25 miles) range at rates from 64 kbps to 2048 kbps, full duplex. T1, Fractional T1, E1 (G.703), Fractional E1 (G.704) with echo cancellation, V.35, X.21, RS-530 interfaces available.

- 2.4 GHz ISM operation for license-free installation in most countries.

- Enables co-location of several links, and coexists with multiple radio systems in the same air space.

- Compact size, simple installation, and built-in diagnostics, monitoring and control programs.
