Education is the real winner at the New York Lottery. Aside from the earnings paid out to ticket holders, education is the primary recipient of Lottery proceeds. In the 2001-2002 fiscal year alone, the New York Lottery distributed $1.58 billion to school districts across New York State. To maximize proceeds to education, the New York Lottery strives to increase sales and minimize expenses. The Lottery found that multiple sales points at higher volume sales locations help streamline the sales process and drive sales. But it needed a cost-effective way to link the extra lottery machines to the central site that gathers the lottery information. Deploying an additional modem at each point of sale would not only be costly, but would require additional space in lottery retail sales locations, which are often quite cramped. Two Modems over a Single LinkIn its tender for a communications solution, the New York Lottery selected RAD distributor Graybar’s proposal, which entailed installing RAD’s MMS modem sharing device at certain, select, higher volume sales locations. The low cost, miniature device enables connecting two lottery machines to the same modem. "The MMS sharing device not only reduces equipment costs at lottery sales locations, but also reduces operating expenses by eliminating additional leased line costs," says Illy Sarid, RAD’s Northeast Regional Sales Director, who was involved in the project. The New York Lottery has placed an initial order for 500 MMS units, with an option to purchase 1,000 more at a fixed rate at a future date.
