Airport travelers rely on accurate electronic reporting of flight information, such as gate listings and arrival and departure times, to navigate through the airport and stay on schedule. Imagine the chaos that would ensue if the computer displays at a busy airport suddenly went blank and flight information were not available. People would flood airline counters with requests for this vital data, which might not be accessible even to airport personnel. And if terminals at check-in counters went down, the entire airport would grind to a standstill. Automatic BackupThis is a scene that officials at Frankfurt Airport would like to prevent. The German financial capital is one of the busiest transportation hubs in the world, with over 100,000 travelers passing through each day. The airport upgraded its information network using equipment from RAD Data Communications to make sure the networks that are used for check-in and supply flight information are operational at all times. RAD's LRS-24 access racks and HTU-2 HDSL access units provide redundant links to the Ethernet network that delivers the data to terminals and displays located throughout the airport. If the main Ethernet link fails, all data is automatically and instantaneously routed via the RAD network.  The airport purchased the RAD solution upon successful testing of the equipment by Mr. Ralf Schneider, network planner at the Frankfurt Airport, and RAD distributor NK Networks, which also supplied the ATM backbone and Ethernet equipment. “The HTU-2 runs at 2 Mbps over copper, which gives us the performance we need,” says Schneider. “It is also a manageable unit. It is important for us to be able to monitor all aspects of the network in order to offer our users the best possible service. RAD provided us with a simple, manageable solution with maximum flexibility,” he states.
