NBC Selects Equipment from RAD Data Communications for Broadcast of 2002 Winter Olympics

NBC has chosen the RAD Kilomux-2104 integrated access multiplexer for implementation at the 2002 Winter Olympics to be held in Salt Lake City in February. Pulse, Inc., a RAD partner and nationwide provider of data communications and wide area networking (WAN) products and solutions, is credited with assisting NBC in the configuration and implementation planning, as well as being the primary sales interface.

NBC will use the Kilomux-2104 units for point-to-point voice and data communications between the International Broadcast Center (IBC) and most competition venues. The units will carry voice and data for an override IFB (interruptible foldback) system that allows NBC producers in the IBC to communicate directly with NBC announcers at the competition sites. The Kilomux will also transport data that will allow fully featured, intelligent intercom panels located at competition venues to work as remote panels directly connected to the NBC intercom in the IBC.

"We were looking for an ISDN solution that would drastically improve the reliability that we were getting from the analog 4-wire modems we used previously," says Andy Morris, NBC Project Manager. "RAD's Kilomux-2104 was the logical solution because of its bullet-proof reliability and because of the high quality of the ADPCM compressed voice card."
