Kazan Scientific Center Chooses RAD's ACE Family of ATM Access Devices for Private ATM Network

 Application
- Private ATM Network
 Challenge
- Implementation of a private, high speed ATM network to improve communications between its various facilities
 Solution
- RAD's modular ACE-101 and ACE-2002 ATM access devices concentrate voice, data and LAN traffic at each site and forward the traffic over fiber links between sites on the private network
 Benefits
- Simple, low-cost solution for ATM access
- Enables convergence of voice, data and LAN services over a single network
- Comprehensive access solution from a single vendor
- Modular devices can easily be upgraded to support increased volume or data rates
Situated 800 kilometers east of Moscow and endowed with a wealth of natural resources, the Republic of Tatarstan is one of the most economically developed republics of the Russian Federation. In addition to industry, higher education and science also flourish in Tatarstan, which is home to over 100 branches of scientific and research institutes, most of which are located in the capital city of Kazan.

Reducing Operational Costs through Private ATM Network

The Kazan Scientific Center, affiliated with the national Russian Academy of Science, operates several research and educational facilities in Kazan. Wishing to improve communications between its various facilities and to reduce operational costs, the Kazan Scientific Center turned to TeleInCom-PQ, RAD distributor and local systems integrator, experienced in network design, installation and maintenance, for expert guidance in building an effective private network solution.

After considering several alternatives, the Kazan Scientific Center chose to implement a private high speed ATM network based on RAD’s modular ACE family of ATM access devices. Each site supports a combination of voice and data services. The facilities are served by different types of equipment, including Cisco Catalyst 8510 switch routers, Catalyst 2924 Ethernet switches and Nortel PBX equipment.

The facilities are physically connected via single fiber and multimode fiber links, depending on the distance between sites. RAD’s AMC-102 media converter and repeater is used to convert between multimode and single mode fiber.

“RAD was able to provide us with a comprehensive, cost-effective, single-vendor solution for ATM access, supporting convergent voice, data and LAN services over one network,” said Marat Biktimirov, Chief of IT Department at Kazan Scientific Center. “Moreover, the modular ACE devices can easily be upgraded to support a larger volume of traffic or a higher speed fiber connection.”

Supporting Voice, Data and LAN Services over a Single Network

The ACE-101 and ACE-2002 are used to concentrate voice, data and LAN traffic at each site and to forward the traffic over fiber links between sites on the private network. Their interworking functionality enables smooth migration of legacy equipment over ATM. The ACE devices support circuit emulation service (CES), which means that PBX voice traffic can be transported over the ATM network as virtual TDM circuits. The Kazan Scientific Center’s private network is connected via E1 leased lines to the Russian Academy of Science in Moscow.

“In addition to the attractive price relative to other vendors’ products, RAD’s single network solution reduces the infrastructure and maintenance costs involved in operating separate voice and data networks. It also minimizes our ongoing communications expenses, as calls between colleagues at our various facilities in Kazan are transferred within our private ATM network and not via the PTT,” explains Maxim Astafiev, Senior Specialist, IT Department at Kazan Scientific Center.

Due to the success of the project, the Russian Academy of Science in Moscow is conducting trials with RAD’s ACE products for running multiple services over its ATM network.

RAD has recently developed the ACE-202, a more robust version of the ACE-101.
