RAD Unveils Unique EFM Access Device Combining DSL and Pseudowire Functionality

Delivers Mid-Band Ethernet Services to SMEs Using IP DSLAM Infrastructure

24th April 2007: At Ethernet Expo: Europe 2007, to be held in London 2nd-3rd May, RAD Data Communications will unveil its unique LA-210 Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) access device. The LA-210 is first in the market to offer a choice of one, two or four EFM ports, together with full pseudowire functionality, all in one box, providing both Ethernet service extension and TDM over EFM over G.SHDSL.bis lines.
"The continuing rapid growth in the installed base of IP DSLAMS is a convincing argument for carriers to take advantage of their ubiquitous deployment to provision EFM services," states Itai Mendelsohn, Product Line Manager at RAD Data Communications.
The LA-210 EFM access device operates over existing copper infrastructure at speeds of up to 22 Mbps to deliver Ethernet services such as virtual private networks (VPNs), high-speed Internet access and VoIP services over bundled SHDSL to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Slashes Capex and Opex by Eliminating Third Device

The LA-210 EFM access device slashes capital expenses (Capex) and management-related operational expenses (Opex) by working directly opposite an IP DSLAM, eliminating the need to invest in an unnecessary third device. Since the LA-210 is based on a standard EFM DSL implementation, it provides carriers with the freedom to provide Ethernet services using a variety of IP DSLAMs.
"Today, only ten percent of business customers are reached by fibre," notes Mendelsohn. "This leaves a virtual universe of potential business customers, particularly SMEs, who can only be connected to EFM services over copper infrastructure," he adds. "By deploying the LA-210, service providers will be able to offer EFM services over DSL for this underserved market."

TDM over EFM Using PWE3 Pseudowire Standards

In addition, the LA-210 EFM access device will be unique in combining both DSL and pseudowire standards defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in its Pseudowire Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3) working group. The LA-210 will, therefore, transport TDM services over IP, Ethernet and MPLS networks. RAD pioneered the introduction of pseudowire circuit emulation technology, having introduced it to the market in 1999. Since then, RAD has taken the lead in its standardisation in the IETF and various other industry institutions, such as the ITU and the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF).

Ethernet OAM Capabilities an Essential Tool to Monitor SLAs

RAD will be incorporating into the LA-210 a full set of Ethernet OAM (Operations, Administration and Management) capabilities. These will include both end-to-end Ethernet OAM (802.1ag-based) and link Ethernet OAM (802.3ah-based). Ethernet OAM is recognised as a cornerstone in the transformation of Ethernet into a carrier-class technology because it allows service providers to proactively monitor their service. By enabling accurate end-to-end OAM performance measurements, RAD’s LA-210 EFM access device will provide an essential tool in monitoring Service Level Agreements (SLAs) end-to-end, guaranteeing that the customer receives the precise SLA that has been contracted.
