UK Businesses Get Connected with RAD's IPmux Pseudowire Gateways

Utilities, finance companies, ISPs and local authorities migrate to next-generation networks without losing quality or investing in new systems

28th June 2007: RAD Data Communications, a provider of network access equipment for voice and data communications, has announced that sales of its IPmux family of TDM pseudowire access gateways continue to grow, with recent uptake among utilities, finance companies, ISPs and local authorities. The IPmux supports legacy traffic over next-generation networks, allowing customers to benefit from the lower costs of next-generation networks without sacrificing quality and reliability or having to invest in new systems. Recent UK customers include Yorkshire Water, BP Trading, Admiral Insurance, Euler Hermes (credit insurance), Griffin Internet (business ISP), Domicillium (business ISP), Cearphilly Council, Archbishop’s Office, Zenitel (communications systems), Telemachus (secure radio), and Quinn Manufacturing Limited.
RAD is the pioneer of pseudowire technology, having launched the IPmux in 1999. It was initially conceived as a service technology for delivering voice and data to business customers over a packet-based network. It later evolved as an inexpensive way for end users to interconnect PBXs between branches over metro area networks. The technology is now also used by mobile operators such as T-Mobile for cellular backhaul.
"When we launched the IPmux back in 1999, it wasn't as clear then as it is today that voice would remain in the TDM format for as long as it has," explains Grant Notman, UK general manager, RAD Data Communications. "What was seen as a short window of opportunity had expanded and people are using pseudowire technology in more places than they’d first thought. After eight years, the IPmux is still going strong and these recent sales are testament to that."

The IPmux-16 converts TDM user traffic data streams into IP packets or frames for transmission over the IP network via an Ethernet uplink. A TDMoIP gateway at converts the packets back to TDM traffic. These gateways take advantage of IP networks to deliver TDM-based voice, fax, modem, and data services without compromising traditional PSTN quality.
