RAD Unveils Cost-Effective SHDSL Modem Hub for Carriers, Utilities and Enterprises

24th March 2009 - RAD Data Communications has unveiled a cost-effective central site solution for point-to-point extension of E1 services over DSL in the Local Loop.

“The LRS-16 serves as a hub for modems deployed at up to 16 remote locations,” explains Meira Erez, Senior Product Line Manager at RAD Data Communications. “It is an affordable solution for small and medium sites, and its small size is particularly appropriate for street cabinets, where space is always at a premium.”

The LRS-16 operates with single or dual power supplies that can be hot-swapped, or replaced, during operation, without affecting system performance. “This is a major advantage because it ensures service providers the level of carrier-class support that they require,” Erez notes.

Another unique feature is that the LRS-16’s Ethernet port can be utilised to cascade units. In this way, more than 16 ASMi-52 modems can actually be concentrated at each central location.

Apart from carriers, the LRS-16 is also a suitable solution for utilities and enterprises with DSL infrastructure.

The LRS-16 employs standard SHDSL TC PAM16 technology to extend normal transmission range, enabling carriers to reach more customers at lower costs. In this way, it can provide E1 services at rates of 192 kbps to 2.3 Mbps over 2-wire lines. Each of the device’s fixed ports, moreover, can have its own separate clocking. SHDSL, (Single-pair High-speed Digital Subscriber Line), is a standardised method of extending the range of copper telephone lines for broadband services.

RADview network management enables centralised control of all LRS-16 hubs, modem ports and remote modems in the network, including interface configuration, connection setup, alarms, and monitoring. In this way, a single management station can control up to 64,000 LRS-16 hubs. The

LRS-16 also can be ordered with an optional SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable) port that extends the system management’s reach even further over fibre by using RAD’s SFP transceivers. RAD offers several types of SFPs with optical or copper interfaces, meeting a wide range of operational requirements.
